Vitruvius was an ancient Roman architect and engineer who is credited with writing the first books on architecture during the 1st century BC. His De Architectura is a ten volume treatise that establishes that all architecture must serve three basic needs: utility, strength, and beauty. Vitruvius drew inspiration frequently from his studies of medicine and science to inform his teachings of architecture and construction, both in design and usage of materials.
